Sacred Children Sacred Teachers: Addressing the Future of First Nations Education

At present, the future of Native North American education is in crisis.  With some isolated exceptions, there are no education systems directly developed and delivered for First Nations youth.  Aboriginal Elders and educators are concerned that schooling outcomes for their children are woefully inadequate.  Cultural customs, values and codes of behaviour are an essential part of the lives of Aboriginal people, yet they are obliged to send their children to mainstream schools where these customs, values and codes have historically been ignored.  Seeking to develop and create new educational models should be viewed as part of the journey - not the beginning, nor the end.  It is only one of many building blocks, which must be put in place to revitalize and enhance the host cultures.

In Sacred Children, Sacred Teachers, we will:

>Explore the past educational system and the present academic milieu

>Examine non-Native cultural conditioning, alternative worldviews

>Discover areas that require intervention strategies

>Study systematic forces affecting both students and educators

>Reveal suggestions on a new conceptual model of preferred characteristics that could assist educational leaders in establishing a healthy learning environment within the education system.
